“Each execution of technique is precise yet sensuous and flows into one another as ice cubes left to sit in a glass of water at room temperature”

♛  HISTORY

Pilobolus is a dance company of which; under any slight change of sequence in its development; might now have existed. The company was first birthed 38 years ago by four Ivy League college students studying at Dartmouth College; later came the addition of two women including Martha Clark bringing the total number of members to six; four men and two women.  Initially the original members lacked a real interest in dance at all and are even rumored to have only taken the class “for an easy A”; this lack of traditional dance training forced the group to rely on creative thinking. In doing so they created a brand new artistic direction based on their more familiar areas of science athletics.

♛  THE VISUALS

In the early stages of Pilobolus’s piece; symbiosis; there is a clear of biological undertone. The setting of blue-ish grey lighting, skin toned loin cloths and the tranquil sounds of String quartet; Kronos Quartet whisk all of your senses away to world where only the quintessential human emotion is needed.

♛  THE CRITIQUE

The dance evokes the feeling that although as humans we are highly evolved; that we are undoubtedly one with the most primitive of life. The movements present a harmonious interaction between performers and a deep coherency of the basis of the dance. Symbiosis: “A relationship between two people in which each person is dependent upon and receives reinforcement, whether beneficial or detrimental, from one another. This is clearly expressed through weight sharing. The dependency of the dancers on one another, allows for them to perform routines they otherwise would be incapable of singularly.

Each execution of technique is precise yet sensuous and flow into one another as ice cubes left to sit in a glass of water at room temperature. The Pilobolus Dance Company sees not bond when it comes to body gesture and in such, has gained a reputation to invent their own language of movement. Every movement of “symbiosis” although seemingly birthed by the one before it holds its own unique identity. In other words; the movements are related but unique in their own right. The dance is choreographed with body language consisting of a wide variety of words that ultimately all come together to tell one clearly coherent tale. These movements in speaking to the audience; seem to communicate with one another as well. They seem to play a continuous game of “act and react” The dancers use the entire stage as if to evoke the sense that they are in their own territory completely oblivious to everything that is out of their “space”.

♛  CONCLUSION

My impression  of this choreography is that it is passion in its most primitive form. It demonstrates the realities of genuine love in that it can encompass both love and disfavor. But it is not always easy to let go rather it be a source of life even if it is detrimental to your existence. The choreographers did a great job at examining to movement of simple life both singularly and as a unit
